It means:  To make an effort to improve the way you do something

Here are 2 examples of the expression, TO STEP UP ONE'S GAME:

Example #1: You're a fast runner, Mike.  But, if you want to make it to the Olympics, you better step up your game.

Example #2: She really stepped up her game, so her salary will probably increase.
